Karachi police have arrested an Ahmadi lawyer for using ‘Syed’ as a prefix in his name, after registering a second First Information Report (FIR) against him over the same charges.
The case against Supreme Court advocate Syed Ali Ahmad Tariq over the same charges was also registered at Karachi’s City Court Police Station last year. The FIR had stated that the Ahmadi lawyer had used ‘Syed’ in his name, therefore action should be taken against him. The case was registered under Sections 298-B and C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC)
The complaint filed against the lawyer today states the complainant heard the lawyer saying that he is a Syed. The case was registered under Sections 298-B and C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
The second FIR was also registered at Karachi’s City Court Police Station. The police have arrested the lawyer.
According to a representative from the Ahmadi community, two FIRs have been registered against the lawyer in the same police station for the same reason.
Earlier, an Ahmadi lawyer who defends members of the community accused of blasphemy, was attacked with a cleaver by a man associated with Madrasa Khatm-e-Nabuwat, in his chamber in district Chiniot.
The attacker had previously attacked another Ahmadi man and is known to be violent towards the community.
According to a FIR, the attacker identified as Zubair Anwar attacked lawyer Amir Munir in his chamber with a cleaver. Before attacking, Zubair had referred to the cases filed against the Ahmadi community members the lawyer was defending.
