‘Imran Misused Public Money As PM’: FM Bilawal Doesn’t Shy Away From Naming Malik Riaz

Published on

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that former prime minister Imran Khan “abused his powers” as prime minister by giving public money to property tycoon Malik Riaz. Bilawal Zardari is the only government official to have named Malik Riaz in light of the case against Imran Khan, instead of merely referring to him as a property tycoon.

Former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday in connection with corruption involving the Al-Qadir University Trust.

The coalition government had accused Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, last year of obtaining land worth billions of rupees for their trust from Malik Riaz to build an educational institute, which according to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), caused a loss of more than $239m to the national exchequer, reported Al Jazeera.

In a press conference today, the foreign minister said that corruption allegations against former prime minister Imran Khan are “serious”.

He said that the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) had investigated the case and had wanted to send £190 million to Pakistan.

“They provided Imran with the chance to give Pakistan its money back. He abused his office, the office of the prime minister of Pakistan,” he said.
