Islamabad Police Claim To Have Killed F9 Park Rape Suspects In Encounter

Published on

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police on Thursday said two suspects in the F-9 Park rape incident were killed in an encounter.

According to the police, the two gunmen who allegedly opened fire at a police checkpoint late last night and succumbed to their injuries early Thursday morning were suspects in the F-9 Park rape case.

According to the police, the gunmen were also wanted in other “serious crimes”.

On February 2nd, a woman was raped in F-9 Park in Islamabad while she was with her male colleague. According to the FIR, two men raped the woman at a gunpoint and told her to “not to come to the park at this time”.

The incident had drawn widespread condemnation from civil society and human rights organisations, with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) banning the coverage of the incident.

Meanwhile, netizens have questioned whether the F-9 Park rape victim had actually identified the suspects killed in the police encounter as her rapists.

Journalist Taheer Naseer questioned if the victim had identified them.

One social media user said: “How convenient! Two unknown gunmen on motorcycle open fire at a check post (for no apparent reason); the sharp shooters of Isb police remain unscathed but kill the ‘attackers’; later it transpires that the shooters were F9-park rape suspects. Quite a number of coincidences.”
