Former prime minister Imran Khan recently claimed that over 80 cases have been registered against him while dismissing them as “politically motivated”. However, there are less than forty cases registered against him.
In an interview with a foreign media outlet, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan claimed that were 85 cases registered against him and dismissed them as “politically motivated”.
However, there were 37 cases against Khan in which he was directly involved when he made the statement. Imran Khan himself is a petitioner in 19 cases that have been filed against government departments and individuals.
This is not the first time the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief has made unverified claims.
Here we look at the recent incidents of Imran Khan spreading disinformation:
Imran Khan’s Arrest Fiasco:
A trial court in Islamabad had issued an arrest warrant against the former premier for not appearing before the court in the Toshakhana case. However, when the Islamabad police had reached Imran Khan’s Lahore residence to arrest him, the PTI chief provoked his supporters, asking them “to come out” on the roads while questioning the legality of the police raid with an arrest warrant before the expiry of his protective bail.
Dissent Today had reached out to legal analyst Abdul Moiz Jaferii over Imran Khan remarks and he dismissed PTI’s claims, calling it an “incorrect reading of the law and a misrepresentation of court orders”.
The PTI chief remained reluctant to appear before the court for several days as his supporters clashed with the police outside his residence, citing an assassination plot against him.
Finally, Imran Khan slammed the incumbent Shehbaz Sharif-led government for planning his arrest. He said it was all part of the ‘London plan’ to finish cases against the country’s former premier Nawaz Sharif.
Imran Khan made unverified claims several times in the last few days provoking his supporters to violence.
‘Ouster A Foreign Conspiracy’:
When Imran Khan was ousted as prime minister through a no-confidence vote last year, he claimed that his ouster was “a foreign conspiracy” plotted in the United States”.
It is pertinent to mention here the police have arrested over 200 PTI supporters over violence during the recent clashes between the police and the party’s supporters.
