SC Declares Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Arrest ‘Illegal’

Published on

The Supreme Court has declared former prime minister Imran Khan’s arrest “illegal”, who was taken into custody by Rangers earlier this week on corruption charges.

While hearing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan s plea against his arrest in corruption case, a three-member Supreme Court (SC) bench, comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Athar Minallah directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to produce former prime minister Imran Khan.

The CJP also questioned how can can any individual be arrested from the court’s premises.

While declaring Imran Khan’s arrest “illegal”, the Supreme Court also ordered authorities to release him “immediately”.

Imran Khan was brought to the Supreme Court through the judges gate, which is uncprecedented.

On Tuesday, Rangers had arrested the PTI chief from the premises of Islamabad High Court in corruption case. The PTI supporters have been protesting against the arrest since the last two days, bringing the country to a standstill.

Earlier, the provincial governments had also sought army’s assistance to maintain “law and order” situation in the country as the PTI protesters damaged various military, government and private installations across the country, setting fire to them.
