Taliban Warn Pakistani Media Against Airing ‘Propaganda’

Published on

Banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has warned Pakistani media channels against airing “propaganda” regarding the terror group.

TTP has specifically warned Dawn News and Ary News for running “propaganda” against the militant group.

In a statement released by a spokesperson of the militant group, it said the group would “review” their policies against Pakistani media if they don’t stop running “propaganda” against them.

In 2021 as well, the proscribed TTP had issued a similar warning to national media and journalists, asking them to refrain from calling them a “terrorist outfit” or they will be treated as enemies.

Pakistan has witnessed a resurgence of terrorism with the outlawed TTP targeting security officials particularly.

Journalists in Pakistan have faced serious obstacles to their work, including harassment, intimidation, assault, arbitrary arrest and detention, abduction, and death.

Earlier, Waziristan-based journalist Gohar Wazir was allegedly abducted by five unidentified men, who tortured him in captivity for more than 30 hours before releasing him on April 21.

The journalist had alleged that during the captivity, he was given electric shocks while he remained handcuffed until he conceded to the captors’ demands. The journalist’s captors had demanded that he record a video praising pro-government militants.
