The LHC had declared the sedition law (Section 124-A of the Pakistan Penal Code) unconstitutional.

The law states: “Whoever by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards, the Federal or Provincial Government established by law shall be punished with imprisonment for life to which fine may be added, or with imprisonment which may extend to three years, to which fine may be added, or with fine.”

According to Voicepk, the complainant, Nasir Tanveer, is a known member of PTI, Bahawalpur. He had previously filed sedition cases against political leaders as well, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former minister Mir Hasil Bizenjo.

Nasir Tanveer has accused Ali Sufyan, who is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Engineering at Islamia University, Bahawalpur, of passing remarks against the army.

The accused has denied the allegations.
