As Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan continues to accuse senior military officials of hatching a plot to assassinate him, senior party leader Asad Umar has suggested Khan and Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir hold a one-on-one meeting to “resolve differences”.

The PTI secretary general gave these remarks during an interview with senior journalist Asma Shirazi.

The PTI chief has accused senior military officials of hatching a plot to assassinate him on several occasions. However, yesterday army media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), released a statement, warning Imran Khan against hurling “baseless allegations”.

Lashing out at former prime minister Imran Khan, the Pakistan Army had said the PTI chief has leveled “highly irresponsible and baseless allegation” against a serving senior military officer without any evidence. It also warned the former premier of legal course.

In response to the ISPR’s statement, the PTI chief before departing for Islamabad today reiterated his earlier claims against senior military officials.

“My reply to ISPR & attempts by PDM & their handlers to arrest me for two reasons: 1. To prevent me from campaigning bec InshaAllah when elections are announced I will be doing jalsas. 2. To prevent me from mobilising the masses for street movement in support of Constitution if PDM govt & their handlers refuse to obey the SC & violate Constitution on holding of elections,” he tweeted.

A child was injured in an army-planted landmine explosion near a checkpoint in Bara, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to details, the landmine planted by the army near a checkpoint for security reasons exploded, severely injuring the child.

The child lost both his arms in the blast.

Human rights activists have continuously urged the authorities to remove landmines from the region, affected by the war on terrorism.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also witnessed a resurgence of terrorism with the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) targeting security officials particularly.

According to a report by Reuters, the banned TTP is targeting Pakistan’s military and police while using sophisticated weapons, including weapons from the stock left behind by Western forces when they exited Afghanistan in 2021.

TTP is supported by the Taliban-led Afghan government.

Last month, two policemen were killed and four others sustained injuries in militant attacks on census teams in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s southern districts of Tank and Lakki Marwat.

In Tank’s Kot Azam area, terrorists opened fire at a police van deployed for the security of census staff while it was returning from a village. As a result, constable Khan Nawab was killed, while police constables Shah Nawaz and Aslam Khan, Levies official Bismillah, Frontier Constabulary official Abdullah and driver Eid Jan were reported to be injured.

Same day in another militant attack on a census team, a Frontier Reserve Police (FRP) police constable was killed in Pirwala area of the Lakki Marwat district when motorcyclists opened fire at the census team.

Earlier, a blast in Peshawar mosque inside a police compound claimed the lives of more than 60 people. The TTP claimed responsibility for one of the deadliest blasts in the city. Last month a police station in Peshawar was also targeted, resulting in three deaths. Meanwhile, the day after the deadly Peshawar attack, Punjab police thwarted an attack on a police station in Mianwali.

Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif held former chief of army staff Qamar Javed Bajwa and former Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) head Faiz Hamid responsible for a recent surge in terrorism in the country.

On February 17th, three militants from the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) stormed into Karachi police headquarters, leading to an hour-long operation. During the operation, three militants were killed while two policemen, one Rangers official, and a civilian embraced martyrdom.

During a session in the National Assembly, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Khawaja Muhammad Asif said the judiciary and the military establishment were directly responsible for bringing the country to a “grinding halt” amid economic and constitutional crises.

The PML-N leader also called for setting up full Supreme Court benches to revisit all “recent controversial decisions”, starting from the verdict in the 2017 Panama Papers case.

He also demanded the formation of a full court bench of the apex court to hear the ongoing suo motu proceedings in connection with the delay in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab elections.

He also questioned the judiciary as to why some judges were subjected to criticism, while others were spared.

Asif maintained that when judges would “transgress” into the domain of parliamentarians, the latter were bound to raise questions.

While referring to Article 63 -A, which deals with the disqualification of members of parliament, Asif said that it was not the job of the judges to rewrite the Constitution and the constitutional crisis the country is facing today is the direct result of that, he added.
