A photo of a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) woman protestor defying police amid May 9 violence that party chairman Imran Khan posted on Twitter, has been revealed to be an image created by artificial intelligence (AI).

France 24 investigated the origin of this photo, saying “an AI-generated photo and two out-of-context videos are being presented as images from PTI’s nationwide demonstrations in support of former prime minister Imran Khan”.

PTI chief Imran Khan posted a video yesterday containing the fake image and said: “the way Pakistani women stood up for Haqeeqi Azadi, they will be remembered and become part of our democratic history. Also what will never be forgotten is the brutality of our security forces and the shameless way they went out of their way to abuse, hurt and humiliate our women.”

The image was widely circulated by PTI supporters and was also shared by party’s official Facebook page.

On May 9, Imran Khan was arrested from within the premises of Islamabad High Court (IHC) by Rangers on corruption charges, provoking nation-wide violent protests by the party supporters.

Earlier, Imran Khan had also quoted a survey conducted by a think tank that appears to be pro-PTI, to highlight his party’s popularity in Punjab. Proper research guidelines were also not followed for the survey.

The News reported that the Islamabad-based think tank was established by a retired police officer five months ago. 10-15 volunteer students interviewed 100,000 people across Punjab, visiting over 4000 union councils, in 5 days — 75 per cent of whom supported Imran Khan.

Many online ‘surveys’ conducted by the think tank also appear to favour PTI.
