Authorities said that the purpose of Rehman’s scheduled trip to Chaman was to demonstrate solidarity with the ongoing sit-in protest, arranged by several political parties and traders, against the government’s recently implemented policy for the Afghan border crossing, which necessitates a passport and a legitimate visa.

A group of police officials, supervised by a high-ranking officer, came to Al-Falah House, the regional office of Jamaat-i-Islami located on Al-Gillani Street in Gwadar, and requested Mr. Rehman to cancel his visit to Chaman due to concerns about security.

Abdul Wali Shakir, the representative of the Jamaat, expressed that Maulana Hidayat had been confined to his residence for more than 24 hours. He expressed disappointment that this action was taken even though the party had promised the inspector general of police and other authorities that they would promote lawfulness and peace.

Earlier, on Thursday, former lawmaker Mohsin Dawar was also stopped from attending said protest in Chaman.

“Local authorities in Quetta and Chaman stopped me from participating in the protest in Chaman. A few weeks ago,I was not allowed to participate in our party’s event in Bajaur.The playing field is being leveled for a few. We stand in solidarity with the Chaman sit-in,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Several charges were brought up against Rehman after talks between the HDT’s leaders and the military commanders in Balochistan failed over the protest demonstrations organised by the movement against illegal trawling.

In 2020, the government had banned fishing and trawling off the Gwadar coast after talks with protesters from the local fishing community. However, the government was unable to curtail the practice. In 2021, thousands of people had staged a series of protests in the port city under the banner of the Haq Do Tehreek.

Local fishermen complain trawlers deprive them of their livelihood. Trawling also destroys the natural seafloor habitat.

The trawlers in Gwadar are usually owned by powerful businessmen, retired army officers and politicians.

Haq Do Tehreek (HDT) is a protest movement against the government with issues comprising illegal trawling in Gwadar’s water, a high number of security checkpoints, and trade on the Pak-Iran border among others.

Several charges were brought up against Rehman after talks between the HDT’s leaders and the military commander in Balochistan failed over the protest demonstrations organised by the movement demanding basic rights.

Police had registered a First Information Report against Rehman and other leaders of the movement, including the former caretaker provincial minister Mir Naveed Kalmati, for causing damages to public and private properties.

The court heard the case after repeated delays, initially due to the transfer of the session judge hearing the case and then due to the judge’s absence.

People have also been staging protest demonstrations against the arrest of the leader across Balochistan.

Earlier, a large number of women protesters led a rally in Gwadar.

Balochistan Interior Minister Ziaullah Langove arrived in Gwadar to negotiate with the protestors, but after the negotiations failed, the police launched a crackdown.

Details of the action against protestors and the extent of the crackdown could not be ascertained due to blockade of the telecommunication system. But social media reports suggest police had used force against the protestors, and that the latest developments may lead to chaos in the city.

Gwadar is a key hub for the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, and citizens of the port city have been raising voice against illegal fish trawling and an increasing number of check points in the city where citizens are often harassed and humiliated.

Meanwhile, mainstream media has been giving little or no coverage to the protest.
