Supreme Court of Pakistan declared former prime minister Imran Khan’s arrest “illegal” on the grounds that he was detained from within the Islamabad High Court’s premises, but Gwadar rights movement Haq Do Tehreek chief Maulana Hidayat ur Rehman remains in jail for over three months despite being arrested from a local court’s premises in Gwadar.

Haq Do Tehreek (HDT) is a protest movement against the government with issues comprising illegal trawling in Gwadar’s water, a high number of security checkpoints, and trade on the Pak-Iran border among others.

Rehman was arrested from outside a Gwadar court where he had appeared for a case related to killing of a policeman in January.

Several charges were brought up against Rehman after talks between the HDT’s leaders and the military commanders in Balochistan failed over the protest demonstrations organised by the movement demanding basic rights.

Rehman had had 19 cases related to vandalism and other offenses registered against him, but was later granted bail by a sessions court in Gwadar in all cases, except one related to the killing of a policeman, during one of the protest demonstrations organised by the HDT.

In yesterday’s hearing on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan’s plea against his arrest from the premises of Islamabad High Court, Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial declared the arrest “illegal” and questioned how can a person be arrested from a court’s premises.

Appearing before a sessions court in Gwadar yesterday, he said that he is denied bail because he is not an influential person, but a common Baloch political worker, who is a son of a fisherman.

“I am not imprisoned because of the court and Constitution, but I am a prisoner of General Asif Ghafoor and General Akhtar Mengal,” he added.

Gwadar police have arrested six members of Haq Do Tehreek (HDT), an indigenous rights movement, after a local court dismissed their bail applications.

The development comes amid widespread protests in Balochistan against the arrest of Haq Do Tehreek leader Maulana Hidayat Ur Rehman. Maulana Hidayat Ur Rehman was arrested more than two months ago outside a local court over several dubious charges.

Police had also registered a First Information Report against Rehman and other leaders of the movement, including the former caretaker provincial minister Mir Naveed Kalmati, for causing damages to public and private properties.

The arrested HDT leaders include: Haji Javaid, Naveed Muhammad, Naseer Shahzada, Allah Baksh, Abid GM, and Liaqat Baloch.

The police arrested the leaders after their bail applications were dismissed by a local court.

Earlier, a large number of women protesters led a protest demonstration in Gwadar, demanding the release of Rehman. The women also protested against enforced disappearances among other issues.

The HDT has been protesting against the provincial government for more than two months. The HDT has been demanding an end to illegal fishing/trawling and unnecessary check posts.

Authorities in Pakistan are critical of dissenting voices and tend to take strict measures to silence them. Earlier, Karachi Central Jail released a Member of the National Assembly and Pashtun Tahafuz Movement leader Ali Wazir after two years of incarceration in sedition cases.
