]]> A Hindu woman in Karachi along with her six children, including teenage daughters, converted to Islam on the same day her husband reported them missing.

According to the husband, Ramji Meghwar, his wife Radha, 36; daughters Mira, 16, Pira, 15, and Piya, 14; and sons Amar, 10, Jay Ram, 7, and Gopal, 4, went missing on May 7.

He filed a First Information Report (FIR) the same day, saying that he found his family missing when he returned home from work at 4:30pm, reported Aaj News.

Seven days later, Meghawar had received a copy of the conversion certificate of his family issued by Jamia Binoria Aalamia, a well-known seminary in Karachi, saying that his wife and children converted to Islam “of their free will” on May 7.

The whereabouts of the woman and her children are still not known.

The forced conversion of underage Hindu girls to Islam in Sindh is a severe issue. Human rights groups have continuously urged the government authorities to introduce laws regarding forced conversations.

Earlier, the United Nations had also urged Pakistan to curtail the practice of forced marriages of young girls from religious minorities to Muslim men. The United Nations had also called on Pakistani authorities to adopt and implement legislation in this regard.

In a statement, the UN had “expressed alarm” that young girls from religious minorities are kidnapped, trafficked, forcibly converted to Islam, and forced to marry men. The statement called on Pakistani authorities to curb this practice and uphold international human rights law.

]]> In an alleged “encounter” in Karachi, a police officer shot dead a Hindu man who was reportedly returning home after collecting money from Social Welfare Department, for his sister’s wedding.

The Hindu man, identified as Kamal Kishan, was intercepted by police in front of a private hospital on May 1, while he was returning home from Lyari where he had gone to collect money from Voluntary Committee (VC) for his sister’s wedding. According to Kishan’s father, who is the complainant in the case, Investigation Officer Farman Shah fired a shot, killing his son.

Following the incident, the police claimed the man was a street criminal.

The cop was booked after the family members of the deceased youth protested in front of the Newtown police station, reported Express Tribune.

According to the victim’s father, at the time Kishan was killed he had Rs80000 cash on him that he had received from the VC along with his mobile phone.

Minorities in Pakistan face growing intolerance and persecution. A senior Hindu doctor was shot dead in Karachi’s Garden area after his vehicle was attacked by unknown assailants, in what has been described by the police as a case of targeted killing, in March. The same month, a Sikh man identified as Dyal Singh was gunned down in the Garhi Ata Mohammad area on the outskirts of Peshawar. A day later, a member of the Christian community, Kashif Masih, was shot dead in Banaras Abad Academy Town.

Forced conversion and marriage of young women from minority religions, including Hindus and Christians, is a growing problem in Pakistan. Hundreds of such cases are reported in Pakistan every year.

]]> In yet another case of persecution of the Hindu community in Pakistan, a 12-year-old Hindu girl was allegedly abducted from a village near Naukot, Sindh.

According to reports, minor girl identified as Nilan Kolhi was allegedly abducted from Haji Sultan Tangri near Naukot.


The girl’s parents protested against the kidnapping.
According to the parents, the police registered the FIR stating the girl’s age to be 17-year-old whereas, they maintained, the girl is 12-year-old.

]]> Police in Mirpur Khas have arrested a journalist for allegedly insulting a Hindu deity and hurting religious sentiments over a complaint filed by a Hindu activist.

A Hindu activist Ramesh Kumar filed a complaint against journalist Aslam Baloch for sharing haring a caricature on social media that portrayed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan as a Hindu deity.

Police registered the blasphemy case under the charges of hurting religious sentiments and hate speech, BBC Urdu reported.

The social media post by the journalist was widely condemned on social media.

Blasphemy laws in Pakistan usually target minorities and are often misused to settle personal scores.

27-year-old Islamabad resident Aneeqa Ateeq is on death row after a court found her guilty of committing “blasphemy” on Whatsapp last year. Aneeqa Ateeq has maintained that she was deliberately dragged into a religious discussion by her accuser after she refused his advances. The Lahore High Court is yet to take up her appeal against the death sentence.

Earlier, an anti-terrorism court in Peshawar awarded a death sentence to a man for committing blasphemy and other religion-related offenses on social media.

A resident of Punjab’s Talagang district filed a complaint with the FIA Counter Terrorism Wing Islamabad against the convict, accusing him of uploading blasphemous content on social media and a Whatsapp group.

]]> UMERKOT: An additional sessions court in Umerkot, Sindh, has approved the bail of a man who has been accused of kidnapping a Hindu girl and killing her brother, allegedly because he is supported by influential individuals in the area. The abducted girl, who was also allegedly forcibly married and converted to Islam, has not yet been recovered. Meanwhile, the police are said to be avoiding recording the statement of their mother.

Earlier this month, Khoso was taken to Kunri police station, but eventually released, allegedly because of a phone call by an influential politician. Activist Shiva Kachhi claims that attempts were being made to bribe the local policemen so they would quash the FIR against Khoso and free him of murder charges.

Hailing from Mirpur Khas, mother of the slain man, Lakhaan, wants justice for her children. She blames Khoso for forcibly converting her daughter, Lalu, to Islam after kidnapping and then marrying her. The court recovered Lalu, but Lakhaan claims they were attacked by four men when she was taking Lalu and her brother to a safer place, after which Lalu was abducted again and Laluu, Lakhaan’s son, was fatally injured by Khoso.
