27-year-old student Muhammad Arslan was jailed for life after a trial at the Old Bailey that continued for three weeks. Aside from murder of Hina Bashir, Arslan has also been convicted of hampering the course of justice. The court said that Arslan was “obsessed” with the victim, and killed her by forcing a mask into her mouth in July last year. He will now serve at least 20 years in jail.

According to Dawn, Arslan confessed to manslaughter, but denied that he had murdered the woman. But the evidence put forth by the prosecution proved otherwise, leading to his conviction.

Prosecutor Gareth Patterson KC reportedly presented the strong evidence against Arslan, which included the victim’s blood that was found on Arslan’s bed. Matching face masks were also discovered at his home and the one used to silence the victim.

It was also stated by the prosecution that Arslan’s DNA was discovered on the handle of the suitcase that he used to hide the body. It was also revealed, through telephone records, that Arslan had taken Bashir’s phone to “jealously examine” her text messages to other men.

The girl recorded her statement with the police before breathing her last at a hospital and said she wanted to marry a man of her own choice and had left home with him. However, she was brought back by her parents.

When she returned home, the girl’s father, brothers, and three relative women sprinkled petrol on he and burned her. She received critical burns. She was brought to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Earlier, a schoolteacher was killed by her family in the name of ‘honour’ in Sehwan.

The bullet-riddled body of the woman was found at home with her family claiming she committed suicide over some domestic issue. However, after investigation, it was found that she was killed by her family for ‘honour’.

The victim was shot dead by her brother, who had confessed to the crime during police interrogation.

During the initial probe, the suspect claimed that he had accidentally fired his licenced 9mm pistol while cleaning it and the bullet hit the waist of his sister, injuring her, Dawn reported, quoting police officials.

The brother claimed that she was then shifted to a hospital for medical treatment but she succumbed to her injuries.

However, the suspect confessed to his crime during police interrogation, saying that his sister had “illicit relations” with a person because of whom he shot her.

The woman suffered two bullet wounds on her head and leg.

According to police, family members were reluctant to lodge the first information report. Therefore, the murder case would be registered against the held suspect on behalf of the state.

Earlier, unidentified suspects had killed an 18-year-old woman and set her body on fire on Indus Highway in Nasirabad, Sindh. 

According to medical examination, the woman was suspected of being killed with an axe or another sharp object.

The suspects sprinkled petrol on the woman’s body and set it on fire.

Dr Mohammad Ajmal Sawand had done his PhD in France in Artificial Intelligence. He had been an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Paris Descartes. He was also a research associate affiliated with the same university.

Assailants opened indiscriminate fire at Dr Sawand’s car in the Shalo area of Kandhkot while he was on his way back to Sukkur from his Shawli village.

Dr Sawand was killed due to an ongoing conflict between the two groups from Sundrani and Sawand clans over a matter of ‘honour’. The conflict started in 2022.

Dawn reported that the conflict involved a girl from the Sundrani clan and a man from the Sawand community. After being declared ‘karo’, the man was murdered in September, while the fate of the girl, who was declared ‘kari’ remains unclear.

Meanwhile, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) also took notice of the incident and condemned the murder.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
