Racist remarks against the Pashtun community amid the violent clashes between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and policemen outside PTI chief Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence in Lahore were seen on a section of social media, with many calling out this racism.

The clashes between PTI workers and law enforcers, who were attempting to detain the PTI chief in pursuance of the arrest warrants issued by a local court in Islamabad on Monday, intensified on Wednesday.

The PTI workers threw stones and petrol bombs at the police officers, leaving as many as 54 policemen injured. The PTI workers also set fire to vehicles.

To disperse the PTI workers, police had used water cannons and tear gas shells. The police had also baton-charged them.

During the protest, a social media user pointed out that a ‘Pathan’ is setting fire to a police van and claimed “Lahoris are not involved in violence against policemen but Pathans”.

Social media users took strongly to the “racist statements” with one social media user questioning if he could read “Pashtun” written across his shirt.

Another social media user criticised the racist remarks and called them “deplorable”.

Another social media user said that he disagrees with PTI and its politics but the remarks made by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supporters are reflective of their “Punjabi nationalism”.

Earlier, the government has claimed that a “Gilgit-Baltistan force” was being used to assault Punjab police “who are trying to implement court orders to detain Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan” outside his Zaman Park residence in Lahore.

The statement was made by Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb during today’s press conference.

The United Nations has urged the government of Pakistan to investigate the death of former senator Usman Kakar, who was found in his house in Quetta, Balochistan, with blood flowing from a head injury, and an alleged “Kill List” that names several individuals to be eliminated.

Four UN special rapporteurs on human rights, including Special Rapporteurs on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; members of Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances and Special Rapporteur on minority issues, wrote a joint letter to the government of Pakistan on December 27 last year and which was only made public yesterday.

Regional leader of the nationalist Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party Usman Khan Kakar passed away in 2021 from a head injury that he had sustained at his residence in Quetta. The cause of the head injury remains unclear.

According to Dawn, the UN special rapporteurs on human rights have urged the government to investigate the death in unclear circumstances of Usman Kakar, while calling on the government to reply within 60 days. Failing this, they said, “this communication and any response received from the government will be made public and also made available in the report to the Human Rights Council”.

Regarding the ‘Kill List’ that has been posted by former spokesperson of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Ehsanullah Ehsan on Facebook and names at least 10 individuals, the UN officials asked the authorities about the measures taken to ensure the safety of the individuals named in the list.

In a Facebook post in June/July, 2021, the TTP spokesperson had alleged that while in captivity he was given a list of about 10 people who were required to be eliminated for their “anti-state activities”. Ehsanullah Ehsan also claimed that he had declined to carry out the assassination orders.

The list included former senators Afrasiab Khattak and Farhatullah Babar, political activist from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Said Alam Mehsud, and Mufti Kifayatullah.

ISLAMABAD: The Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) in Islamabad on Monday night shut down indefinitely while seeking Rangers’ deployment after a clash between Baloch and Pashtun ethnic student groups turned violent and injured several people.

The clash reportedly occurred between Baloch and Pashtun student councils, leaving a number of students injured. The clash also caused extensive damage to the university.

Earlier in the day, the QAU requested the Interior Ministry to deploy Rangers within the university’s premises “for identification and expulsion of outsiders/miscreants from campus and hostels”.

In a letter to the Interior Ministry, the university authorities said the Monday violent fight is a continuation of a fight that took place a few days ago. The university said the conflict between ethnic student councils disrupts the academic environment and creates a law and order situation on campus.

The university also added that they have previously raised this matter a number of times with the concerned parties but it was of no avail.

On Monday night, the university shut down indefinitely, directing all students, including boys and girls to vacate the hostel premises immediately as well.

The cause of the conflict is not known.

Several videos of the violent clash are circulating online wherein a large number of students can be seen attacking each other with sticks.

This is not the first time violent clashes have erupted between student groups at QAU.

In 2017 as well, two ethnic student groups clashed, resulting in the deployment of Rangers within the university premises to curtail the violent situation.
