Quetta – Manzoor Pashteen, the founder of the ethnic rights group Pashtun Tahafuzz Movement (PTM), was arrested by the police in Chaman, Balochistan while he was on his way to Turbat to attend a sit-in against extrajudicial killings of Baloch men. According to PTM activists, the police opened fire at the vehicle carrying Pashteen and his supporters before arresting him.

PTM sources further said that two activists of the group were injured, but Pashteen remained unhurt.

In a statement issued four hours after the arrest, Chaman Deputy Commissioner Raja Athar Abbas claimed that the arrest was made after PTM workers fired at the police from Pashteen’s vehicle.

Before his arrest on Monday, Pashteen had addressed a sit-in in Chaman against the forced deportation of Afghan refugees from Pakistan. During his speech at the Chaman protest, he had announced that the PTM would stand in solidarity with the Baloch activists who have staged a sit-in in Turbat.

Last month, National Democratic Movement (NDM) Chairman and former lawmaker Mohsin Dawar was briefly detained in Quetta and forced to go back to Islamabad while he was on his way to Chaman to attend this protest against Pakistan government’s new border crossing laws.

A day later, Maulana Hidayatur Rehman Baloch, the leader of Gwadar’s rights movement Haq Do Tehreek (HDT), was also arrested by local authorities ahead of his visit to Chaman for participation in the same protest. The sit-in in Chaman has been going on for over 40 days now.

While law enforcers showed restraint in Lahore and other parts of the country when the protesters stormed military residences, setting fire to buildings, the protest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters held in Quetta was dealt with force. A protestor was killed in Quetta when the police opened fire at the protest.

According to reports, police opened fire at protesters in Quetta, who were holding a demonstration against the arrest of former premier Imran Khan.

Due to the firing, one person died while many were reported to be injured.

PTI chairman Imran Khan was arrested yesterday by Rangers from Islamabad High Court in a corruption case.

On the other hand, protesters in other parts of the country, including Lahore, and Rawalpindi, broke into military residences, setting fire to buildings.

In Lahore, PTI supporters stormed Corps Commander Lahore residence, setting the building and furniture on fire and stealing valuables from the house. In Rawalpindi, protesters stormed Pakistan Army’s headquarters.

Earlier, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had also expressed concerns over the “state’s widespread use of enforced disappearances” in Balochistan to muzzle dissent.

In its fact-finding report, titled: “Balochistan’s struggle for Hope”, the human rights watchdog noted that there have been continued reports of enforced disappearances in Balochistan and there was no improvement in the situation since 2019 when the HRCP’s team visited the last.

At least four people were killed and nine others were injured in a blast in Qandhari Market in Quetta.

According to APP, the blast occurred near a police vehicle.

TV footage showed a damaged automobile of the police surrounded by a number of police personnel.

Pakistan has witnessed a resurgence of terrorism with the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) targeting security officials particularly.

According to a report by Reuters, the banned TTP is targeting Pakistan’s military and police while using sophisticated weapons, including weapons from the stock left behind by Western forces when they exited Afghanistan in 2021.

TTP is supported by the Taliban-led Afghan government.

Last month, two policemen were killed and four others sustained injuries in militant attacks on census teams in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s southern districts of Tank and Lakki Marwat.

In Tank’s Kot Azam area, terrorists opened fire at a police van deployed for the security of census staff while it was returning from a village. As a result, constable Khan Nawab was killed, while police constables Shah Nawaz and Aslam Khan, Levies official Bismillah, Frontier Constabulary official Abdullah and driver Eid Jan were reported to be injured.

Same day in another militant attack on a census team, a Frontier Reserve Police (FRP) police constable was killed in Pirwala area of the Lakki Marwat district when motorcyclists opened fire at the census team.

Earlier, a blast in Peshawar mosque inside a police compound claimed the lives of more than 60 people. The TTP claimed responsibility for one of the deadliest blasts in the city. Last month a police station in Peshawar was also targeted, resulting in three deaths. Meanwhile, the day after the deadly Peshawar attack, Punjab police thwarted an attack on a police station in Mianwali.

An elderly woman, who was abducted from Quetta on February 2nd along with her son Muhammad Rahim Zehri and his family members, including wife and children, has said that she told the “men in uniform” that she was willing to take an oath on Holy Quran as they were taking them away but they kept beating her.

Zehri’s mother and his children returned home a day after their abduction. Whereas, his wife returned on Tuesday, while Zehri still remains missing.

Zehri’s mother told BBC Urdu that she was willing to take an oath on Holy Quran that they had done nothing wrong but the men who had broken into their house started beating her up until she was unconscious.

She said that some of the men were in uniform and as soon as they broke into the house, they started searching the place.

“I told them we are poor people and there is nothing in our house. But they did not listen to me and continued with their search”.

“They kept asking about my son and daughter-in-law. My son had taken his wife to a doctor at the time so they were not home”.

“They waited for my son and daughter-in-law to come back and as soon as they returned, they started taking us away,” she said.

“I presented Holy Quran before them and told them that I was willing to take an oath that we had done nothing wrong but they started beating me up until I was unconscious,” she added.
