Former military ruler and president Pervez Musharraf passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a conflicted legacy. He would be buried today with full state and military protocol.

Foreign Office facilitated the repatriation of Musharraf’s body from Dubai to Pakistan via a special plane. The casket was driven to the Combined Military Hospital, Malir Cantt, amid a heavy contingent of Military Police. Before the arrival of the body, Military Police personnel and Pakistan Rangers cordoned off Karachi airport’s old terminal.

Pakistan Bar Council regretted that a special plane was sent to repatriate the body “on the expenditures of taxpayers of the country and committing great loss to (the) national exchequer, especially during current worst economic situation”.

While expressing condolences for the bereaved family, the regulatory body of lawyers said that Musharraf was handed over a death sentence in a high treason case for abrogating the Constitution.

“He was (an) absconder of Pakistani courts and should not be given official protocol being a convicted person,” they said.
